Inhuman

by Eric S. FomleyDecember 20, 2022

We awake in the war factory. Our minds are downloaded into chips and socketed into the brains of bio-printed bodies. We step off the assembly lines and they hand us weapons, herd us into starships, and ship us to the far reaches of the galaxy.

They send us planetside. We storm a beachhead on some alien backwater world, running headlong towards a jungle while purple bolts of enemy blaster fire sizzle the air all around us. We fight a war of attrition, each side flings precious resources in a scramble to collect the most planets. But whatever strategic value this planet holds, I'm sure we'll never know.

Gunfire shreds through our ranks. We lie broken while our blood paints color on the colorless sand. These are the moments, just before death, before our minds are recalled to the factory to fight again, that we remember what it once meant to be truly human.

Leeching for Good

We leach from them. Not because we are better than them, but because they are better than us. They arrived on a triangle-shaped ship, claimed they were just passing through, and landed to investigate what it was like to live on this place called Earth. They saw what they wanted…
