Finally Free

by Frances SilversmithSeptember 12, 2013

Laira stood in the damp cellar, stared at the narrow bed she had spent her days on for the last seven centuries. Seven hundred years, without once seeing the sun.

"You'll get used to it," they'd said. "You'll love being a vampire."

They had lied.

She turned and ascended the stairs. At the front door, she hesitated.

Seven hundred years. How she missed the sunshine. She opened the door, stepped outside.

Birds sang. The morning sun painted the world in bright colors. She drew in the scent of spring flowers and fresh grass.

For one glorious moment, she was free.
