Apocalypse in Yellow
by Dafydd McKimmSeptember 19, 2022
When the sun pops, we watch hand-in-hand from the wold.
"So this is how it all ends," you say, as molten gold erupts through the blue.
I try, as I always do, to find some silver lining: "Perhaps it's how something better begins--who knows?"
Cosmic fire coruscates over your lambent cheeks. I think of the Turkish word yakamoz--the moment when moonlight hits the surface of open water. Sea sparkle.
You reply: "But what could be better than this, than now?"
I struggle to think, and when you point at the sky--gasping like a child on bonfire night as a meadow of yellow marigolds blooms in the firmament--I have no answer silently; I have no answer still.

Excavation
Eyes aglow, you tell me where the dragon is buried; so early one morning, before the autumn has waned like the moon, we go to dig it up. You are more excited than I am, brightly singing as you walk, lamp already lit, shovel swinging in your hand, and your smile, your radiant…
Hidden in Her Wild Red Eyes
At dawn on the first day of spring, I wake to the clamor of the gentlemen leaving the city on their horses, the morning sun glinting on the bright barbs of their hunting spears and the iron talons of their giant hawks. It is late afternoon by the time their triumphant bugles…
All Our Secrets Thus Revealed
He phased into view in the middle of the stage, punctiliously dressed in a top hat and tails, his translucence diminishing nothing of his inscrutability. When I asked for his name, he gave only the Magnificent Benvolio, but after I untethered him from that tumbledown theatre,…
Sleep, Dragon
Soon after the old man wakes, he takes his lyre to the cave where the sleepless dragon guards the golden hoard of a long-dead king and plays songs he hopes will send it to sleep. Before leaving his hut, he feeds the dying fire from a dwindling pile of foraged wood and sets a pot…
The Colossus Stops
When the Colossus stops moving, the silence hits the island like a thunderclap. The creak and screech of its enormous limbs have been a constant companion to each of us since birth, a lovingly cooed lullaby, now so suddenly, so violently, absent. As far back as anyone can…
